Some programs (I.E. BBEdit) allow the user to call it via command line using a protocol handler URL.
I.E. At a shell, you can type:
bbedit sftp://host.fqdn/path/file
This will open the file using BBEdit's own SFTP handler. This both removes the need for temporary staging files, and does not require that CyberDuck stay open. Could we see this at some point?
