With the "Transfer Queue" window hidden, the status bar in the file browser does not indicate that any transfer (upload or download) is taking place. Unfortunately the only option is to "Bring transfer window to front..." which does just what it says, obscuring the browser. With it unchecked, no transfer window appears (even in the background) and there is no other indication that activity is taking place.

The transfer is not connected to the browsing session therefore there is not status message in the browser window. One could however introduce a growl notification for transfers started.
