i'm getting a weird repeated error that just started with the latest release.

S3 Error Message. Bad Request. Your socket connection to the server was not read from or written to within the timeout period. Idle connections will be closed.

this only happens on uploads. is anyone else getting this?

Most likely (and hopefully) this is a temporary issue.

I also have this same error with the 3.8 for a few days now, since upgrading to the latest version!

Is it due to Amazon S3? And what did you do to make it 'worksforme' ?

You can try to augment the timeout for network operations in Preferences → Connection → Timeout.
