I am experiencing extremely slow application launch times with version 4.0.1 (8510) in excess of 2 minutes. I have tried deleting the application and all associated files and preferences, but I still have the issue in a completely fresh installation.

Can you find any related output in the system.log (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app)?

Try updating your Java installation manually.
