Is your software also safe to use in public or open wifi hotspot's like those of hotels? What would be the best setup to securely upload files to the server? Could a VPN like HMA or ExpressVPN help securing the process?

Use a protocol in Cyberduck that is secured with TLS (HTTPS for WebDAV or FTP-TLS) or SFTP. Additional protection with a VPN is possible.
