Can't connect to server

I have recently downloaded Cyberduck however after several times trying i still can't connect to server. Every time i try a pop-up opens saying 'connection refused: connect. the connection attempt was rejected. the server may be down, or your network may not be properly configured'. As a 'newcomer' to this sort of technology could you please inform me, in Lehman's terms, what I may be doing wrong or what might not be correct to keep inducing this pop-up. Thank you for your time.
