General

What is Cyberduck?

Cyberduck is an open source FTP/SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer), WebDAV and Amazon S3 browser licenced under the GPL.

Is Cyberduck free?

Cyberduck is free software. Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. If you find this program useful, please consider making a donation. A donation would not only demonstrate your appreciation of this software, but also help to advance development in the future. It will help to make Cyberduck even better!

What are the system requirements

Mac OS X

The latest version requires Mac OS X 10.5 on PPC/Intel, Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) on Intel.

  • Cyberduck 4.4 or later requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
  • Cyberduck 3.3 or later requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
  • Cyberduck 3.0 or later requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later. The latest version available is 3.2.1 supporting Mac OS X 10.4.
  • Cyberduck 2.5 or later requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. The latest version available is 2.8.5 supporting Mac OS X 10.3.9.
  • Cyberduck 2.3 or later requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The latest version available is 2.3.3 supporting Mac OS X 10.2.

Make sure to install the latest Java Update from the System Software Update.

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) & 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

Make sure to install the Java runtime when requested from the OS. After the automatic installation completes, Cyberduck will restart. If the download fails you can alternatively manually install Java for OS X. The version available from the App Store does not require the optional install.

Windows

Requires Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32bit/64bit) with .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile. If installation fails, download manually from

Where are preferences and application settings saved to

Mac OS X

In ~/Library/Preferences/ch.sudo.cyberduck.plist. Bookmarks, History and Workspace information is saved in ~/Library/Application Support/Cyberduck/. When running sandboxed (Mac App Store version) these are in ~/Library/Containers/ch.sudo.cyberduck.

Windows

  • Windows 7. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Cyberduck
  • Windows Vista. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Cyberduck
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Cyberduck

Preferences are stored relative to the folders above in Cyberduck.exe_Url_[id]\[version]\user.config.

Donation Keys

As a contributor to Cyberduck, you receive a donation key that disables the donation prompt that is displayed after installing or updating Cyberduck. Support for donation keys is available in Cyberduck 3.2 or later.

Recover a Donation Key

Donation keys can be recovered using the email address you registered with Paypal.

No donation key received

  • A key is sent when the the payment is no more pending.
  • Verify that your email address registered with Paypal is still valid.
  • Check the spam folder of your email application.

The donation key received cannot be opened

The donation key is sent to you by email automatically after the the Paypal transaction has been completed. Make sure the filename of the donation key ends with .cyberducklicense. Some email applications change the extension to .xml when saving the attachment. If the key is invalid, the file must have been modified when saving it from your email application. Try the following:

  • If you are using a webmail provider, try using a different browser or email client application to access your mail. 
  • Contact your hosting service provider how to download attachments.
  • Forward the mail to a different mail account where you possibly don't have an issue downloading attachments.

Mac App Store

The presence of Cyberduck is important for the visibility of the project in particular for new and average users on the Mac platform. The caveat is that the donation key model is not supported in the App Store per the developer agreement. Software asking for voluntary contributions does not get approved. We have therefore opted to distribute Cyberduck in the App Store for a fixed price with no donation prompt. It is your choice to buy the version from the App Store or download from the website and opt in for a payment if you feel like. Cyberduck is libre (FLOSS) software and will remain so in the future.

Your purchase receipt from the App Store version is copied to the Application Support folder and recognized as a key when running any version of Cyberduck.

Translations

My preferred localization is not available!

Why not contribute a translation yourself? Contact David Kocher for all the relevant files *.strings for translation. Current available localizations are English, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Slovak, Spanish, Chinese (Traditional & Simplified Han), Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, Danish, Polish, Indonesian, Catalan, Welsh, Thai, Turkish, Hebrew, Latvian, Greek, Serbian, Georgian and Slovenian.

Make sure to subscribe to the localization mailing list.

Choose Localization

Thirty localizations are included in Cyberduck. When launching the application, the first matching language is choosen according to the Languages list in System Preferences → International. To change your preferred language for all applications, change the order there. If you only want to disable a localization in Cyberduck, use File → Info for Cyberduck.app in the Finder and uncheck localizations you don't want to use in the Languages section (Only available in Mac OS X 10.5). As of 3.4.2 one can choose the localization to use in Preferences → Language within Cyberduck for users of Mac OS X 10.6.

Bug Reports and Feature Requests

How do I submit a bug report or request a feature?

Open a new ticket using the issue tracker with a description of what you have a done and what went wrong or describing the missing functionality in detail. Make sure to look or search for existing tickets first.

  • Make sure to include any related output in the system.log (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app).
  • Always include the full transcript from View → Toggle Log Drawer.

Enable debug logging

Mac OS X

Open a Terminal.app window and enter

defaults write ch.sudo.cyberduck logging debug

Restart Cyberduck and look for output in the system.log in Console.app (In /Applications/Utilities).

Reset the logging configuration with

defaults delete ch.sudo.cyberduck logging

Crash reports are saved to ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter.

Windows

Logging information can be found in the cyberduck.log file in the AppData directory. Crash reports are saved to the same directory in a folder named CrashReporter.

Debug logging can be enabled with a hidden setting. As there is no user interface for this yet you need to change the settings file manually. Add the entry to AppData\Cyberduck.exe_Url_*\[Version]\user.config as follows:

Snapshot and Beta builds

During the development of Cyberduck, current snapshots are published regularly that feature the latest enhancements and bugfixes. Builds are numbered with a revision. The higher the number, the newer the build is.

Switch to a snapshot build

Choose Snapshot Builds in Preferences → Update → Automatically check for updates to update to the latest build. In this mode, frequent updates are available. You can always switch back to the Release feed and only get notified once a stable release is available superseding your nightly snapshot build.

Switch to a beta build

Choose Beta' in Preferences → Update → Automatically check for updates to update to the latest beta build. In this mode, builds that haven't release quality yet but include the latest features are available.

You can also get the latest builds (Mac, Windows) by manual download.

Others

The application does not launch

If you can find the message No matching version for 'JVMVersion' (1.5) in 'Java' from Info.plist in the system.log (open Console.app from /Applications/Utilities), run the system software update of OS X (from the Apple menu) to update your Java installation.

Launch application in 32-bit/64-bit mode

Version 3.3 or newer is bundled as a 64-bit capable application but is launched in 32-bit mode by default. If you prefer to run the application in 64-bit mode (with a higher memory footprint), toggle File → Info → Open in 32-bit mode for Cyberduck.app in the Finder.

Incompatibilities

  • WindowDragon. Cyberduck is not compatible with WindowDragon.
  • Sophos Anti-Virus On-access Scanning (see #5971).
  • Make sure no librarires (*.jar dependencies) are installed in /Library/Java/Extensions or ~/Library/Java/Extensions respectively that take precedence in the Java classpath. Installing such libraries per system or user is discouraged as it will ultimately lead to versioning conflicts sooner or later.
